The oatcakes in this packet are handmade and produced using a 100-year-old recipe passed down through the generations of the Reid family in Caithness. Donald Reid’s grandmother devised this oatcake with a unique toasted flavour.
Traditionally, oatcakes in the North Highlands were part of the staple diet and made by every family. They were baked on a girdle over an open fire turned and toasted on both sides before serving with cottage cheese or Scottish crowdie, a local delicacy. Originally, the oats baked in the Reid’s bakery were grown on local farms and milled at the old John O’Groats watermill.
